Info

A truck drives past a mountain showing considerable destruction caused by miners in Carrefour La Boule, south of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on July 13, 2008. The sandy earth is used for cement, the primary material used in new construction in Haiti. The destruction appears worst outside of major cities, such as Port-au-Prince and Cap Haitien. With major forests now depleted by the charcoal industry, the stone is the only building material available.
